Month in Review: June 2016 K-Pop Releases

A look at of some of the K-pop releases in June.

And just like that, the first half of 2016 has come and gone… June often is a month for girl groups to release big (sexy) summer hits. Did this past month live up to that expectation? Let’s look back and find out!

First up is EXID with another sexy release. This time the girls are not running a gas station, but a hotel. So that’s an improvement right from the start! There’s a good bit of little sexual innuendos in the MV. If you take a look at the lyrics you’ll find they aren’t as sweet as you might imagine… On the contrary, EXID is upset and isn’t taking it anymore. They even claim the cheating boyfriend should never have been born. I found the line distribution a little predictable, but the lines each member got were executed well, especially Solji‘s parts. I’d just like to see them switch things up a little more, maybe with a different type of song composition. However, I enjoyed the two breakdowns with the heavy beat and the dance. Those really added something to the song. Plus, it was good to see Junghwa in the center for those dance breakdowns.

2〉 Sistar

The queens of summer releases, SISTAR, couldn’t miss out on this summer either. “I Like That” is different from their past few releases, which was refreshing to see. This still is a sexy summer song, but they shook things up. I love the mysterious feeling they tried this time around. The MV looked great as well. I especially loved the shot where Soyu is lying on the floor at the bottom of the staircase. And the dance is great! Using those skirts the way they did is really creative and makes for a great experience watching their live performances. A great release ladies!

3〉 Brave Girls

Speaking of sexy summer releases…. Here’s another one! Brave Girls are singing about how wearing high heels makes them more attractive and how they’ll make the guy they want theirs. I personally don’t often wear high heels, but I have to admit, wearing the right shoes can make a big difference in how you feel. The shots with the members in each of their own sets are a little odd sometimes, but they are entertaining. Also, props to the guy dancing in heels! The shots at the end were fun too, with the extras just dancing.

4〉 Taeyeon

Last up is Taeyeon with “Why.” For me, this song really gets good around the 1 minute mark of the MV. The first part doesn’t really do much for me, but around that point in the song it gets much better. I love the backing track there and the harmonies that Taeyeon sings are great. The whole feeling of the song there is amazing. The shots with the colored smoke look pretty cool too! Yet, this isn’t my favorite song on her mini album. I found “Up and down” featuring Hyoyeon the best. It’s a surprising combination, but one that works out really well! So check out the rest of the album if you haven’t already.

June Verdict

June was the month of the sexy summer releases, as I kinda expected. They were fairly good, but I’m also curious to see what the rest of the summer will bring. And shout out to this groovy release by Heize and Dean’s “Shut Up & Groove.” Onto the second half of this year!
